ON the surface, Bonang Matheba is a bubbly personality.

She appears smiling on TV, at social functions and in glossy
mags, and top notch designer clothes are some of the qualities
she has come to be known for.
But deep in her heart she harbours pain from an allegedly abusive
relationship with ex-lover DJ Euphonik, real name Themba Nkosi.
On the other hand, Euphonik claims Matheba is a psycho who
needs help.
He supports his claim with the announcement that the YFM DJ cut
her wrists in a bid to grab his attention - which Matheba denies.
These conflicting tales are reflected in three sets of documents the
couple proffered at the Randburg Magistrates' Court, accusing
each other of this and that.
These detailed court documents reveal that the celeb couple were
trapped in a tumultuous relationship long before the incidents
that sparked the arrest and court drama that happened two
months ago.
In an affidavit, Matheba says Nkosi "abused me physically and
emotionally" throughout their relationship. She says she started
absorbing punches and kicks from Nkosi as early as last year.
"On that day, he hit me on the body and slapped me in the face,"
she says of the first assault she suffered at the 5FM DJ's hands.
"On another occasion he slapped me across the face following an
argument. He later apologised and we put the incident behind us.
"He assaulted me again in the same year. This time he punched
me in the face while we were driving from his place to mine," she
states.
She says she told her mother, who advised her to get a protection
order against him but "my attorney and I decided against it as we
thought it would draw unnecessary and negative media coverage.
"The respondent has over the years ... been verbally abusive
towards me."
She claims her attorney undertook to speak to Nkosi to convince
him to try to change his ways, but the two men never got to talk
because Nkosi was away in Australia.
Later that same year, Matheba says, her boyfriend wrote a
message on a social media network site after failing to reach her
on her cellphone, saying: "@Bonang_M please call me before you
make me f**n angry."
Matheba further writes: "It is quite clear that I was under abuse at
the hands of the respondent, who in the past few months had to
attend therapy as a result of his failure to deal with and control
his anger.
"I am not aware if he is still attending the sessions. For his sake
and those around him, I hope that he completes the process," she
writes.
About t he incident that broke the camel's back, Bonang says: "He
started pulling my hair, hitting my face with a cellphone.
"He kicked ... my body while I lay on the floor. He further
damaged my laptop, cellphone and crockery by throwing them on
the floor," she claims.
Matheba says she had to attend a function after the assault "so I
engaged the services of a make-up artist, who covered me with
heavy make-up ... to hide the bruises".
Matheba and Nkosi are due back at court on July 24 for the
criminal matter and in August at the domestic violence court.
